Elys\u00e9e Bistro is the proud successor of Elys\u00e9e, the once legendary coffee house founded by the G\u00f6nczi brothers on Kossuth t\u00e9r. Our aim is to become the meeting point of gourmets, where, open to the novelties of gastronomy, we combine typical Hungarian and French bistro meals, always using the freshest ingredients. Istv\u00e1n G\u00f6nczi, J\u00e1nos and L\u00e1szl\u00f3 had been born into a family of restaurateurs and have studied and worked abroad for years, in London, Paris, Berlin and at the Italian and French Riviera. After World War I, all three of them returned abroad to work to obtain capital. They returned home in 1924 and opened the Mignon Cafe on the Danube shore, on the boardwalk. One worked as a waiter, the other as a barista, and the third as a dishwasher. As they did not get a liquor license, they sold the up-and-coming business but remained as waiters. \u00a0A few years later, they founded the two significant cafes of Kossuth Lajos t\u00e9r: the Monico and and the \u00c9lys\u00e9e.<\/p>\t <\/div> <\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The imposing M\u00c1K palace, sealing the northern edge of Kossuth t\u00e9r, had been built in 1928. Large store locations were positioned on the ground floor of the building designed by B\u00e9la M\u00e1lnai and Gyula Ha\u00e1sz. One of these had been rented by J\u00e1nos G\u00f6nczi and opened a caf\u00e9 in it under the name Monico. Others also took note of the opportunity and soon, two other caf\u00e9s had opened on the opposite end of the nearly \u201cdead\u201d Kossuth t\u00e9r from a hospitality perspective: the Orsz\u00e1gh\u00e1z (Kossuth t\u00e9r 10., the building of which was finished by 1928) and Unio, completed in 1932. Monico\u2019s twin, \u00c9lys\u00e9e, opened just a few months earlier, in December of 1931. The last in line was the short-lived Biarritz in 1938.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The cooperation between the owners of Monico, the first caf\u00e9 that had operated in this building, in the M\u00c1K palace \u2013 between the two G\u00f6nczi brothers \u2013 was not always without its negatives. For a while, Istv\u00e1n and his brother J\u00e1nos managed Monico together \u2013 until they had had such an altercation that it has even gone to court. Soon they realised that the legal fees were so large that they were jeopardizing the survival of their business, so they made peace instead, but they had to take out a loan as the substantial loss had also been inflicted upon the caf\u00e9.<\/p>

In spite of the foregoing, the profession considered the three brothers as \u201cone of the most renowned and fortunate triumvirates\u201d. In 1931 L\u00e1szl\u00f3 left their first business, Mignon on the Danube shore, and decided to stand on his own two feet as well, taking over the other corner room on the ground floor of the M\u00c1K palace with the support of his brothers and lots of loans, and open an elegant musical-dancing caf\u00e9 as a counterpart to Monico, under the Elys\u00e9e name. The business operates in a corporation format, with one member in addition to G\u00f6nczi and his wife.<\/p>\t <\/div> <\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Just three months after its foundation, L\u00e1szl\u00f3 G\u00f6nczi is forced to look for new partners. The owners of the Sanus Milk Plant, the three Fried brothers, G\u00e9za, L\u00e1szl\u00f3 and S\u00e1ndor, take over Elys\u00e9e; G\u00f6nczi remains in a manager capacity \u2212 and as a competitor of his own brothers.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The new owners emerged from the troubles with new ideas. Brand new, modern equipment was installed at the business, designed by the world renowned industrial artist, Lajos Kozma.
It was around this time that among the bourgeoisie, bridge has begun to make spectacular inroads, which \u2013 like all other card games \u2013 has been a popular card game in caf\u00e9s. It is entirely certain that it was for bridge that the later professional player and the writer of teaching books G\u00e9za Ottlik, of whom we can learn at least one heart-warming little tidbit of local specialties: \u201cElys\u00e9e had fantastic wieners, and a goodly portion of potato salad with mayonnaise always came on the side with everything.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\t <\/div> <\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The residents of the elegant neighbourhood were decimated by the war. A portion of the large Jewish population fled abroad, many were taken away.
Until it was possible, the caf\u00e9s on the square continued to operate, even providing music and shows.
In the meantime, the owners of \u00c9lys\u00e9e, the Fried brothers have changed their names to Gordon, a Hungarian name, but this was not enough, either to feel safe; at the very least, they had to exit the business, at least seemingly. Two trustworthy friends seemingly purchased the caf\u00e9 and then once the situation settled, have returned it to the original owners.<\/p>\t <\/div> <\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

After the war and the Communist takeover every caf\u00e9 on the square had been nationalised, some of them discontinued operations and some others changed function.
\u00c9lys\u00e9e closed down, the neighbouring Monico primarily served tourist groups under the name Sz\u00f3fia. In 1967 it was rebuilt on the basis of the plans of interior architect B\u00e9la Sz\u00f6r\u00e9nyi.<\/p>

After several decades, \u00c9lys\u00e9e returns to Kossuth Square to write history again.<\/p>

The BUILDING: The M\u00c1K palace<\/strong><\/p>

The two architects of the rental palace hosting the Elys\u00e9e caf\u00e9 were B\u00e9la M\u00e1lnai (1878\u20121941) and Gyula Ha\u00e1sz (1877\u20121951). M\u00e1lnai was also a student of two pioneers of Hungarian architecture, \u00d6d\u00f6n Lechner and B\u00e9la Lajta. In addition to his historical, eclectic buildings, he had also created masterpieces in the Bauhaus style. Gyula Ha\u00e1sz learned from more traditional masters, Alajos Hauszmann, Gy\u0151z\u0151 Czigler and Imre Steindl. In addition to apartment buildings, he had designed many significant public buildings for cities outside of the capital. The M\u00c1K palace is an excellent synthesis of the effects they had been subjected to.
